The IRB's NOVA system was deployed in 2011 to replace the STAR legacy case tracking system. The NOVA system contains personal information that is used for administrative purposes concerning proceedings associated to the Refugee Protection Division (RPD) and the Immigration Appeal Division (IAD) of the IRB. Upon the coming into force of the
Protecting Canada's Immigration System Act, NOVA will also be used for tracking cases associated for the Refugee Appeal Division (RAD).

NOVA provides a level of protection that reflects the IRB's need for availability and integrity, Government of Canada requirements for Protected B level information, and the requirements of the
Privacy Act and associated Treasury Board policies.
The NOVA Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) was submitted to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) on July 26, 2011. The PIA identified a number of concerns and an action plan to address each concern. The PIA and the PIB will be updated accordingly.
